News08.02.2008Simple Living Institute is excited to present our second Kids' Festival, scheduled for Saturday, September 20th, 2008. The Kids' Festival is an event custom-made for children aged 5-12 to explore and engage in Simple Living-style activities including conservation and organic farming. This event will be held at the Econ Farm, which is a rustic outdoor setting, so come prepared for Florida weather. Activities will include a hydrology lesson/river swim, scavenger hunt, seed planting in the garden, and celebration and snacks at the end. View the program page.07.28.2008Simple Living Institute is co-sponsoring the Ethos Vegan Kitchen Plants and Gardening Freecycle. A freecycle is like a free flea market - items are laid out on tables and everything's free! Bring your unwanted plants, pots, garden tools, etc for drop off; you can exchange what you bring for something else, or just come and get a bunch of stuff for free. Volunteers from Simple Living Institute will have a table set up to answer any plant identification or care questions you may have. Simple Living Institute will also be giving away free organic compost made on the Econ Farm with coffee grinds donated from IKEA. See you there!07.25.2008
Our Organic Growers Meeting is a huge success! Each month we are happy to see familiar faces and welcome new attendees. However, with all of the interesting conversation, it has been difficult to end the meeting on time, which is 9:00pm sharp. In August we are going to try to conclude the meeting at 8:30pm and meet afterwards at Ethos Vegan Kitchen at 1235 North Orange Ave, just a few blocks west of Leu Gardens. That will give us a chance to chat longer and discuss possible topics for future meetings, workshops, and field trips. Please join us!

View their two-minute interview titled "Here They Come to Save the Day."05.21.2008At our Organic Growers Meeting, Pete Von Lersner showed us basic grafting techniques and helped us practice on citrus, loquats, and white sapote. Grafting allows you to quickly get the best tasting fruit on less desirable trees. Pete recommended grafting several varieties of the same fruit on the same tree (for instance, several varieties of grapefruit on a single grapefruit tree). Thanks, Pete!
05.18.2008Simple Living Institute, Inc. got some great exposure at the Green Earth Expo 2008 held May 15-18 at the Orange County Convention Center.
